The Best Patty Melt Ever with a Special Sauce Twist

Description

Hello, food lovers! If you’re craving a comforting, indulgent meal, you’re in for a treat. Today, we’re diving into the world of the Ultimate Patty Melt – a heavenly blend of juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, gooey Swiss cheese, all held together by crispy rye bread. And let’s not forget the secret sauce that takes this dish to a whole new level! Whether you’re a patty melt pro or a first-timer, this recipe will elevate your meal with rich, unforgettable flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 8 slices of rye bread
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter, plus extra for spreading
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Secret Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp relish
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Feel free to experiment with the bread (try sourdough for a twist) or make it gluten-free by swapping rye for your favorite gluten-free bread.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Secret Sauce
In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

Step 2: Caramelize the Onions
Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.

Step 3: Form the Beef Patties
Divide the ground beef into four portions, forming each into a patty slightly larger than the bread slices, as they’ll shrink while cooking. Season both sides with salt and pepper.

Step 4: Cook the Patties
In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium heat for about 4 minutes per side, or to your desired doneness. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Step 5: Assemble the Sandwiches
Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Spread a generous amount of the secret sauce on the non-buttered side. Layer with Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and top with another slice of bread (buttered side up).

Step 6: Grill the Patty Melts
In a clean skillet, grill the sandwiches over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted. Keep an eye on the bread to avoid burning while achieving the perfect melt.

Notes

  • Don’t Rush the Onions: Patience is key when caramelizing onions. Allow them to cook slowly over medium heat to develop a sweet, rich flavor that complements the savory beef and cheese.
  • Choose Good-Quality Bread: Rye bread is the classic choice, but you can also try sourdough or another hearty bread that holds up to the fillings.
  • Customizable Options: If you want a spicier kick, add a little sriracha or hot sauce to the secret sauce.
