Description

The ultimate patty melt recipe with juicy ground beef, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, rye bread, and a tangy secret sauce grilled to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough for variation)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter, plus extra for spreading
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp relish
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste (for sauce)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
  2. Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.
  3. Divide ground beef into four portions and shape into patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. In the same skillet, cook patties over medium heat for about 4 minutes per side or until desired doneness. Remove and set aside.
  5. Butter one side of each bread slice. On the opposite side, spread the secret sauce. Layer Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and top with another bread slice (buttered side out).
  6. In a clean skillet, grill sandwiches over medium heat for 3–4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for the juiciest patties.
  • Slow-cook the onions for the best caramelized flavor.
  • Sourdough, Texas toast, or gluten-free bread can be used instead of rye.
  • Try cheddar, provolone, or pepper jack for cheese variations.
  • Cook patties slightly larger than bread to account for shrinkage.
