Description
The ultimate patty melt recipe with juicy ground beef, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, rye bread, and a tangy secret sauce grilled to golden perfection.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough for variation)
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 4 tbsp butter, plus extra for spreading
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp relish
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste (for sauce)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
- Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.
- Divide ground beef into four portions and shape into patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet, cook patties over medium heat for about 4 minutes per side or until desired doneness. Remove and set aside.
- Butter one side of each bread slice. On the opposite side, spread the secret sauce. Layer Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and top with another bread slice (buttered side out).
- In a clean skillet, grill sandwiches over medium heat for 3–4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted. Serve hot.

- Use 80/20 ground beef for the juiciest patties.
- Slow-cook the onions for the best caramelized flavor.
- Sourdough, Texas toast, or gluten-free bread can be used instead of rye.
- Try cheddar, provolone, or pepper jack for cheese variations.
- Cook patties slightly larger than bread to account for shrinkage.
