Description

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting, old-fashioned dish featuring juicy ground beef patties baked in a creamy onion gravy—perfect for cozy dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs Ground beef – 80/20 blend for best flavor
  • ½ cup Breadcrumbs – Plain or seasoned
  • 1 Egg – Beaten
  • 1 Onion – Finely diced
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 3 tbsp Butter – Salted or unsalted
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Beef broth – Low sodium preferred
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion – Sliced
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  3. Form into 6–8 oval-shaped patties. Set aside.
  4. In a large oven-safe skillet, brown the patties for 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onion until softened.
  6. Stir in flour and cook for 2 minutes to form a roux.
  7. Gradually whisk in beef broth and cream until smooth.
  8. Add garlic powder and bring to a gentle simmer.
  9. Return patties to skillet, nestling them in the gravy.
  10. Cover tightly and bake for 45 minutes, then uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.
  11. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure patties reach at least 160°F.
  • You can prep the patties and gravy ahead, then bake when ready.
  • Low-sodium broth prevents the dish from becoming too salty.
  • Pairs well with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.
